Do you know Google is slowly accruing your personal details
without your knowledge? Since the advent of Internet and Google, there are so
many people who have published personal information that they would otherwise regard
as private.
Have you ever been concern that a person living in another
continent who you have never meet can, or your future boss, spouse et..al can
tell at least 25% of your personal details, thanks to social networks like
Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Whist we
unknowingly give out our personal details none of us would think it would
either affect us in one way or another.
Social
Media and Online Presence Present your True Identity
When it comes to sharing your personal information online I would
advise you to be very careful not only with your personal information but also
the way you interact with other people online. I wrote a post previously that the average Kenyan online is a troll;
your next boss could try to figure out how you behave in social media or
online.
How
can this affect your next Job Interview?
Before your next interview, your boss may probably begin a
research on who you are and one of the best places to get your information is obviously
on Google, there he may land on your Facebook profile, your Tweets and so on.
In
a nutshell, your boss can tell the kind of employee they are about to hire.
Although this is not always the case, more and more future employers will be
keen to look at recruits’ social media and online reputation before they can
make the decision to hire them.
Remember you will be representing your boss and his organization
when you are hired. If you have a bad reputation it may highly erode the
organization values and moral aptitude.
Consequently it might have far reaching
negative effects on the business. In this case no employer out there will risk hiring
you if you have a bad reputation no matter how competent you are in your skills
or expertise.
Why
would an Employer Bother to Google your name?
Finally let’s answer the question why your boss may need to Google
your name before hiring you. First you are more likely to be hired for a job if
you have a good reputation. Remember a good name is said is better than gold.
Online reputation is increasingly becoming an important factor
when hiring or doing business with a new person. In most cases if you have a
bad reputation online your boss will see it directly from Google results as I
will show you in the next post.
In the next post I will focus on how to find if you have a bad reputation
and what you can do to improve your online reputation.
